Week of February 27th, 2012

Reading

We will be reading The Great Ball Game. In this story two groups agree to play a ball game to end a quarrel. Both groups agree that the winners may set a penalty that the losers must accept.

The comprehension strategy we will work on is summarizing.

The comprehension skill is cause and effect.

The vocabulary words are: accept, advantage, argument, penalty, quarrel.

The grammar lessons will focus on possessive nouns and improving writing.

In phonics we will work on vowel pairs oa, and ow.

Math

We will continue to work on plane figures. Our chapter test will be on Thursday and we will begin a new chapter on measurement.

Social Studies

We have been learning about presidents in general and Abraham Lincoln in particular. The children know lots of facts about our 16th president so be sure to ask them to share their knowledge. We have also been discussing the achievements of Black Americans in honor of Black History Month.

Early Dismissal

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012 the children will be released at noon.

Student of the Week

Our special student this week was Jessica. A few of Jessica's favorite things are the color blue, elephants, macaroni and cheese, monster books and tennis. At school Jessica likes to draw. At home she likes to watch T.V. and build forts. When Jessica grows up she wants to be a movie star.
