Reading
Next week we will have our third Writer's Workshop on Persuasive Writing. Your child will have to see how persuasive he or she can be in convincing someone they need a special gift. They will need to organize details around this topic and proceed to write a paragraph to persuade you or someone else to get them what they want.
Christmas Around the World and Holiday Homework
The week of December 13th we will be doing a unit about holiday celebrations in different countries. There will be no reading lesson that week. In addition to learning about other countries the children are to share their own family holiday traditions with the class. Each child received a sheet explaining the assignment with the date they are to do their oral report. Using a poster with some pictures will help your child remember what they want to talk about. Their report should be about 3 to 5 minutes long. The purpose of this activity is to introduce the children to speaking in front of the class. Your help in preparing them at home is appreciated.
Math
We will continue to practice two digit subtraction. Our next test will be on Thursday.
Many children are still counting on their fingers. PLEASE keep working on the math facts.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
It was nice meeting with many of you at the conference for your child. I hope your questions were answered. You can always reach me by e-mail if you need to do so.
Student of the Week
Our special student was Tommy. Tommy has one sister and one brother. Some of Tommy's favorite things are the color blue, dogs, ice cream, baseball, math, and playing outside. Tommy shows people he care about them by making them laugh. Tommy wants to be a fireman when he grows up.
Christmas Caroling
The second grade children will be going to Fairview Village in Downers Grove on December 16th to sing holiday carols and give holiday cards to the residents. Please return the permission slips by December 10th. On that day the children will be eating in the classroom because we will be gone during lunch. Please send a sack lunch since they will not be able to participate in the hot lunch program.
Christmas Party
Our class Christmas party will be on Friday, December 17th.
